Most scientists refer Georg Simmel to the founders of Theoretical conflictology. Namely Simmel introduced in the scientific revolution, the term " sociology of conflict." Georg Simmel is an influential German social theorist. He was especially respected within the 'Chicago School' that dominated American sociology during the first half of twentieth century. Often misunderstood, over time his contributions have become more widely recognized. German sociologist Georg Simmel (1858–1918) believed that conflict can help integrate and stabilize a society. He said that the intensity of the conflict varies depending on the emotional involvement of the parties, the degree of solidarity within the opposing groups, and the clarity and limited nature of the goals. In 1904 The American Journal of Sociology published a translation of Simmel’s renowned “The Sociology of Conflict.” in which he argues that conflict is a positive force that strengthens social relationships.

Simmel conflict

An examination of Karl Marx's and Georg Simmel's theories of conflict is undertaken with an eye toward assessing what they offer contemporary theorizing. The contrasting purposes, metaphysical assumptions, conceptualizations of variables, and propositions of Marx and Simmel are presented and compared. In a vein similar to Marx, Simmel emphasized that violent conflict is the result of emotional arousal.Such arousal is particularly likely when conflict groups possess a great deal of internal solidarity and when these conflict groups emerge out of previously harmonious relations.Marx postulated a similar process in his contention that polarization of groups previously involved in social relations (albeit exploitive ones) leads to violent conflict.
