The syndrome does not affect intelligence or cognitive functions, only mobility. Constructive surgery can typically correct the abnormalities. Poland syndrome – also known as Poland sequence – is a congenital (present at birth) disorder. The main characteristic of Poland syndrome are underdeveloped muscles on one side of the body, which results in problems with the chest, shoulder, arm or hand on that side of the body. Being born with any medical condition or physical abnormality can be difficult for both the child and the parent. Being born with an incredibly rare condition like Poland syndrome, though, makes life even trickier to navigate at times. In over 30 years of life, my condition has given me some interesting experiences.

“Simple things like buying clothes can be hard. You can see what clothes would look like on a girl with big boobs, a girl with small boobs, but you can’t see what it would look like on a girl with one of each. Poland syndrome is a congenital malformation affecting the chest muscle and hand on one side of the body. The cause of Poland syndrome is not yet certain. The main chest muscle (the pectoralis major) is absent. The fingers are webbed on the same side of the body. Poland’s syndrome is a very rare condition that is characterised by webbing of the fingers and of underdevelopment of chest muscle.
